Hi. I'm new in SL. So please excuse, if my question is too dumb. I like the idea to use vendor machines and basically I know how to config them. Although I'm wondering how I could tell the machine to sell an exact number of a certain item. And when the number is sold, that the machine says something like "Sold Out" to people who try to buy and refuses to take money?

There are two types of 'vendors' in SL. Scripted and non-scripted. I'm guessing you're saying that you understand non-scripted vendors, where you set the price in the container prim and vend the object stored in then container contents.
To do what you're asking, you're going to need a scripted vendor, one that vends a specific number of the items, and then after the limit is reached, shuts down.
You'll need to read up on the money event, and setup a counter that sends the script to an idol state when the limit is reached.

Thanks for your response. Yes, I guess such a scripted vendor is what I need. Unfortunately I don't know anything about making scripts. I searched this forum, but couldn't find anything. Perhaps you can point to where I can find or buy one?

There are ready made vendor systems available. Namely JEVN and APEZ.
Both offer easy configuration and setup via a web interface along with providing you with extensive sales statistics as well as setting individual prizes, discounts, etc for your products and also letting you only sell a limited number of certain products should you want that. This works even if you have several vendors set up inworld.
Mind though that they do seem to be quite costly at first but are definitely worth the money once your sales start picking up.
Should you wish to use your own vendor system then I advise you to take a look at the scripting library. There should be at least one multi-item vendor script in there which you may be able to modify to suit your needs.
