A former colleague of mine built a bunch of cool objects in SL and sold them to me for $0 when he left the company so I could continue his work. When he sold them to me, though, the scripts were marked no copy, no modify for future owners. So, now I can modify the objects themselves but I can't even see the scripts, much less edit them. Sadly, he doesn't have any backup copies.

Is there any way to fix this?
It would be great if I could somehow change the scripts to yes copy, yes modify. My former colleague is still available to help out with this if there's some role he could play. Any thoughts?

We're ramping up for a big presentation and I need to tweak some of his stuff, so any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

I guess your best bet would be to both contact Linden Labs about that issue as only LL can do anything about it - if at all.

Linden Lab won't touch it. Sorry to say, but you're stuck :(

Can you give them back to the original owner/avatar? He might be able to change the permissions and return them.

Tried that.

Once an object is transferred also the creator is treated as just another owner.
If you can forward it at all.

best regards

I'd give it back to the original creator, the one who has his/her name in the creator's name box. And then ask said creator to tell Linden Labs that there was a permissions bug and now he can't edit his own creations.

Sneaky... but it might make LL get off their asses and do something.

Did he delete them completely from his inventory or something? Seems kinda strange he doesn't have copies anymore all of a sudden.

Other than that, there is no good way to get perms changed. LL will most likely patently refuse to change any perms. They *may*, however, agree to restore deleted items from backup if this wasn't too long ago. First, be sure to have your friend check his trash folder to see if the objects are there, then have him put in a support ticket to LL to have them restore them from backup, if they will.

Sadly i have no answer either, but i did think it the right place to emphasise that even much maligned Notepad is great for saving copies of scripts, before sending them into LL oblivion..and even a screen grab can be a future texture loss preventer....

Certainly the limited SL access is what initially (and still does) inhibit my open dealing with SL. If what i give, stays with SL, then sadly, what i dont give, (ie make sure i have an original version of) stays with me....since i pay to use SL, but do not get assured access to stuff i pay a fee to give them..

Imagine a bank didnt give access to money..even if it cannot access the money itself, but charged folks to give money to it.

I think i am in the wrong business....:)

I had this thing happen to me once, and while the permissions did not reset in my inventory, when I rez'd it in world, it miraculously recognized me as the creator and let me edit again. Obviously this is the only time I've had to test this theory, however.

I think when I did it and got it to work, I had shift copied it in-world from my partner.

Your mileage may vary, and I wouldn't count on LL doing anything about lost items either. I submitted a ticket about 4 months ago about something being lost from my inven during a crashfest day...never heard a word about it even still...not even a closure notification that I recall. I notified them within an hour of the occurrance and went through all the silly steps that never fix anything before it was 'escalated' into oblivion. I even informed them the exact name, date/time it was created, and the folder chain in my inventory where it could be found if they just looked for it.

Now it's to the point where I hope they never do it since, my luck, they'll just overwrite my current inven and cause me to lose hundreds of other items.

Yes, same thing happends to me.
I give some object to my partner and delete it.
Latter when she give it back to me and i rezz, the object let me do everything since im the creator.

Thanks for all the ideas, folks. I did try giving the object back to the creator and having him re-rez it but the permissions issue persisted. :(

Fortunately, after a bit of work, he was able to dig up an old copy of the objects. It took some doing, but we were able to reconstruct what we had before -- and restore full access to the scripts. Whew! You'd think there would be an easier way!
