I am relatively new to scripting, and I am looking for practical ideas for scripts to practice with. Does anyone know what types of scripts are in demand in SL? Sil You are looking at it backwards. With any content creation; animations, texturing, building, scripting, it starts out as; What do I want? And goes from there. You learn the skills to create something you find useful and most times there are others that will find it necessary. _____________________

Makes sense, but that's part of the problem. I enough of a nubee that I really don't know WHAT I need. My goal is to be a scripter and to eventually sell my scripts.

like jesse said, you need to know what it is you want to make. you may be better off exploring the world and getting some inspiration. i sometimes see an item i want, but feel it is overpriced or it's not the perms i want, so i try to figure out how to do it myself. also, is there something you enjoy in real life? would it be something usefull in second life? even if it's not possible in real life, you can inhance it in second life.

The other thing you can do now is get your tools in place.
I personally recommend LSLEditor for off-line scripting, syntax checking and even testing code. It has a copy of an older, but still good wiki built in, and a full library of sample scripts. _____________________

you can always cheat.... find something simple (like a door) and make your own, then compare how it was done to how you did it.... you'll find that other people know some shortcuts that you don't, and if they aren't obvious you can ask why

If we had a good idea about what scripts are in demand, would we tell competitors? Probably not, unless the script would take way more time than what we're willing to invest into it.
So I'm basically with the rest here: go, explore, and look into things that aren't as good as you'd want them to be. Then ask yourself if the features you're looking for exist or not, you might have found a market right there if the features of a script don't include something you know you can do. Another good point is looking through the employment and products wanted forums, there are often requests for scripters and scripts there. Just be careful not to get into things that are over your head. People often have no idea what they're actually asking for, when looking for a scripter or some "simple" script. /me is pretty lucky to have more-or-less a job as an in-house builder/scripter, tied to a certain enterprise. Which basically means there's often work for me, in the quantities I want to handle, while I still have enough spare time on SL to do whatever else I like to do on SL. |

I was in the same boat as you awhile ago. I made a forum post offering free scripting services. Well, I ended up creating a few free scripts for folks and got quickly overwhelmed (and bored) with people begging free stuff off me.... in the meantime I continued to explore SL and discovered a bunch of things I wanted to do for myself.
Now I have a huge laundry list of personal projects. Imagine that. |

There's lots of different scripted items in world, pick one that's simpler as opposed to harder, and remake it, expand on it maybe, as was stated in a previous post 'make it your own'. Then go into biz with even just that simple item. You can generally rent a small mall cubicle for really cheap, and start vending that item. That's pretty much how I got started. When I was a newbie scripter, I thought about a scripting challenge, and I came up with a clock. After I got my first clock done, I started selling it. Soon, I was able to make a couple of different styles. My first clock was a wall clock, then I quickly added a couple of mantle clocks, then a grandfather clock, and before you know it, I was selling 40 different styles of clocks. I've also since branched out into making greeters, huds, sim scanners, rezzers, snow makers, and more.

I think scripting in SL can be really fun even if you are just messing around with it. I would suggest starting out with a well documented vehicle or physical example which can provide alot of gratification and amusement especially since Havoc and Mono came in. Check the scripting sub forum here for some good headstarts.

just make sure to make stuff for fun, specially in the beginning, cause if your thinking to make money, you`ll get dissapointed faster then you can type llDie (can say this from partial expirience as i hate rl work

That's basically the problem you face as a scripter: it very quickly turns into a job. And a very lousy paid job at that.
I spoke to some SL photographers who basically ran into the same thing. Before they knew it, they were spending hours and hours in Photoshop, and were NOT having fun. SL jobs can be a ot of fun, but they can give you a rather nasty burnout as well if you don't have time left for fun. So really, just experiment with things, that's fun. If you find something to sell, then that's even better. But always remember to have fun! |

It's not the problem it's the point. You should never expect to run a business in SL at the same level or wage in RL, if it's not fun you really shouldn't be doing it. I make my own textures and I do dread the time it takes me 'away' from SL, I usually rush it and then spend the next day doing all over again properly, I do what I do in SL for my own enjoyment, and if i make any money I'm pretty happy, whatever the amount. |

i always fidget with little ideas
and from those collection of snippets i learn more and more about X scripting system from their those little snippets turn into bigger and better scripts, which serve as inspiration as products most will say "what do you want", others will say "try and duplicate", i say just fiddle with it, the more you fiddle with it, the better you will understand whats going on, then when you WANT to make something, your armed with the knowledge instead of being hopelessly lost and frustrated, which WILL shorten your interest in scripting in no time at all |

I started out scripting in LSL by reading the scripting wikis. As I learned the language and library, some library function or other invariably started giving me ideas. I think my very first (non-trivial) project was an anti-gravity belt that allowed you to fall upwards, walk on air, and fly without flying. Inspired by reading about physics and dynamics functions here: http://www.lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=dynamics
