Hi hope someone can help me.

Im wondering if its possible to "billboard" something, i.e have it turn to face the user wherever they are looking, like we used to do trees back in the vrml days.

Ive got a single rectangular prim with a alpha'd person on it, which i need to always face the user within its proximity.

this is so that the user cant see that its a simple shape with a texture on..

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Take a look at how Particles work. Might be easier.

This can help you : http://slhomepage.com/lsl/ExampleLookAt.htm

If you come to release it, please throttle llSensor so that it reduces its scan rate in absence of avatar.

Better still use collision detect to actually activate it.

Particles are the way to go with this

take a look at how particles work...you can set a simple particle generator to send a rising particle several times a minute...and the cool thing about particles is that for every viewer of the particle, it appears to be facing them.

Contact me in world if you want to see a working example...I imagine that the particle engine could be reconfigured to not allow the particle to rise..so that it basically pops out of the generator, and stays there...

Now, if you need the texture to be clickable, as in the case of a bartender that would give out drinks, one possible workaround that comes to mind is creating a mostly transparent shape that the particle will pop up thru, so that when the particle is clicked on, they are actually clicking on the transparent shape...which would actually be the vendor of the drinks...
