I know about llSameGroup and llDetectedGroup. And I understand those allow me to compare an AV with the object the script is in the check if they are in the same group. But, is there any trick/hack out there to let me check if an avatar has a group tag up if I have the group key but the object isn't set for that group?

sadly, you can get group keys, but the only things you can compare them to (effectively) are other group keys... because you can only get them for objects, not av's.
