Is there anyway to add someone to a group through scripting only? Or does it *have* to be done manually by an avatar?

No. Yes, but you can do it with a bot avatar, too.

It was the answer I didn't want to hear, but thanks anyways. Now I've just got to figure out the bot avatar =P

You can invite them to join a group using a script.
Just IM them the Group URL and it appers in the chat history as a clickable link.
Adding people to groups without consent is not well recived and may be a TOS violation, but making it easy to join a group helps everyone.

However, that just brings up the group info dialog; it is not a true group invite. So the group must be open for all to join.
