Ok, because of a recent post I read, I am interested to find out why people are all jazzed up about security so much.
I don't need any help with a script, but I don't know where else to put this post. Moderators please feel free to relocate. Apologies if this isn't proper for here.
Being a person that does do some scripting, and having some rental properties here and there... I have the following questions:
Myself being a bit peeved with ban-lines - although I understand them - why are many of you dead set against security systems?
I use small security scripts I've written for my rentals, that way I don't have to put up ban lines and allows free sailing through the sim for flight vehicles, passers by, etc.
Therefore, when people ask for help with scripting security, or where to find a device I don't understand the hatred of it. Why is this such a bad thing?
All most people really want is that while they're gone they have (albeit minimal) a little protection from people entering their place while they're gone / be able to hold a private party, etc.
I think that with reasonable scripting, some politeness in the security itself (don't push people around / eject / ban, etc. without plenty of warning to let them be, and consideration for the user.
My opinion is that I would rather have some security systems on my property for specific areas (houses, rentals, businesses, what have you) and not have ban lines up - than the other way around which is a burden for people that only wish to fly around and look at things.
My 2 cents - don't start a flame-war over this, just be interested to hear the other side of this and why, rather than just hate messages.
Take care, Hap

Many of the security systems out there, and I say this as a sweeping yet likely highly accurate generalization, tend to TP home after 5 seconds and minimal, if any, warning that may not even be heard by the 'intruder.' I've had it happen in many situations where I teleport somewhere, only to be teleported out before I even fully load to read their warning message. The same goes for flying. I've had instances where no one could possibly turn around fast enough to escape, or where I was teleported home without even having been in range to hear the warning message. Having no ban lines is nice, but many systems are still rather harsh, and I actually feel in those situations that I'd rather bounce off a wall than be sent home if people can't give a decent warning interval. The other sticking point that many scripters tend to find fault in is the potential for poorly-scripted systems to suck up resources. Some systems may not feel that the default sensor functions are adequate, and make use of elaborate sim-wide scanning, or other overkill processes.

Very good points. It is a shame that there are so many devices out there that cause so much trouble. I think it would be much easier for everyone if smaller, localized security solutions could be created and start bringing down the ban lines. Personally I build and enjoy other flying vehicles and the like... but you can't fly anywhere in SL on mainland and not get stuck, ejected, or pushed if you're not on a vehicle...
If people would simply use a little more ingenuity or perhaps a better word is kindness in their systems, it wouldn't be such a problem.
I implemented a system I asked for help on a while back that seems to work really well for my small apartments... it's simply collision based transparent cubes. someone collides with it that is not the owner / on a list if desired, then it tells you that you are in a secured area and to please leave. 30 secs later it will tell you that in 10 secs the system will activate and offers you a nearby teleport. If you accept it, it brings up the map so you can tp.
Then, it does nothing more than turn all blocks solid, thereby "squeezing" you out of the area. No push or send home involved at all. If someone does somehow get stuck they cna pull up the map, and teleport right next to the area in question... no problems. Haven't seen that happen yet, but it's an easy solution if someone were to somehow get stuck.
So, my point is that I don't understand why people don't use things like this or others I can't even imagine how to make that are simply polite security systems.
Ah well. Maybe someday the grid will come up with a better plan. Take care, Hap

LL reccomends at least 10sec warnings IIRC.... but it your zooming through, 10 sec is not nearly enough time to get the message, react, and get out..... so people feel like they're being smacked by an invisble hand with no way to avoid it. I know it annoys me.
I've always used either a slower timer, or if I have a workshop area where I've ideas laying about, a layered zone, with the inner zone being set VERY short, but a warning on the outer one with a slower timer...
mostly I don't even bother with the things unless I'm online, I figure if I'm not there what do I care if people wander around (although this has taught me to make autoclosing doors.
if I'm on and want privacy wether for personal or social gatherings then yeah, fire it up =)
Conclusion: I have no problem with the idea, but some implementations are just mean and rude and I know lots of people have experienced this first hand, which garners hatred for even the legit and polite ones.
