Simple sheath/unsheath dagger script

Hi everyone! I am really new to scripting. I have taken a series of classes by an excellent scripter and studied scripts in objects so I have "some" idea of the basics.

I made a thigh dagger and all I really want it to do is unsheath and sheath. I've read the other threads on the subject but still a bit confused.

It sounds like there are two daggers - one held in the hand and invisible until the unsheath command is given.

But I have no earthly idea where to begin with that script.

Can anyone supply any help here or point me to where I could pick one of these scripts up....or something with a similar script to study?

Thanks :)

Czari,

I think maybe an adaptation of a window-tinting script. See here for one example:

/15/5c/108297/1.html

Also see Qie Niangao's tiny little alpha texture script...drop it in a prim and it goes invisible.

Some combination of those ought to do it...the idea being that a touch on the dagger, or on a controller HUD, would turn the sheathed copy invisible, and turn the held copy visible.

Combine that with a slight "shkkk!" sound and maybe a knife fighter crouch pose.

Some of the weapons makers might be willing to help you, too. Look up the maker of the "Black Rose" katana on Samurai Island...I don't recall his name right now, but he was very nice when I had questions about his products.

Thanks so much for those tips Lindal :) Will check them out. Some of it seems a bit "Greek to me" but as with everything else I've learned in SL...little by little :)

Here's a bare-bones example.

CODE

integer ShowHide;

default
{
state_entry()
{
llListen(1, "", NULL_KEY, "");
}

touch_start(integer total_number)
{
ShowHide = !ShowHide;
llSetLinkAlpha(LINK_SET, ShowHide, ALL_SIDES);
llSay(1, (string)(!ShowHide));
}

listen(integer channel, string name, key id, string message)
{
ShowHide = (integer)message;
llSetLinkAlpha(LINK_SET, ShowHide, ALL_SIDES);
}
}

Put this script into the two objects. First click on either of the objects will cause the other object to become invisible. Thereafter, clicking either object will cause each to reverse its visibility.

Tip: The listen needs tightening up or in all likelihood the the scripts will hear all sorts of junk.

Oh, and this script works because a script can't hear itself. :)
