When my script is doing work, the object containing the script has particles orbiting it (by default). Is there any way to turn this off?

make a call in the script with llMakeParticles([]); that will turn off the particles. Particles are a prim property, like floating text, not a script property, so once you start them they don't turn off tell you specifically tell them so.

by "work".. do you mean it is "Saying" anything?
there is a "default" swirl of "Magic" every time an object speaks in open chat. This is intentional to help identify which object is speaking (20 vendors in a row, 20 slot machines, etc).
The only way to disable this, if it's what you're experiencing, is to make the script stop "talking" (no whisper, shout, or say... probably no ownersay either). Try using llInstantMessage instead, or use llSetText to display the results in floating text above the object

I haven't defined any particles, but if the script is doing work in a timer event, for example, particles circle the object. I tried calling llSetParticleSystem([]), but it doesn't seem to change anything.

can you post the script here? perhaps we can figure out where the particles are coming from. (it sounds like "speech swirlies" to me.. since you haven't defined any particles)

OH, that sounds like the object is speaking something to someone. Yuo can't get rid of those particles, as Winter pointed out.
