How do you do facial animations? Is scripting involved?

I crossed posted this in the Animations forum as well so please forgive me for two threads but I am wondering if this is done through a combination of both scripting and animations so if anyone can help please do. Here is the original post:

I need some help here. Recently I have seen animations that have facial expressions in them. Eyelids opening and closing, mouth opening and closing or smiling. Tongues sticking out etc.

These are not the animations from the stock animations in the create gesture functionality but rather as part of custom animations in animation balls.

I recently purchased Poser 5 and from what I can gather you can only use poser 2 models to create animations for SL. BUT there are no capabilities for animating the face in Poser 2 models. Sooooooo can someone tell me in detailed steps/techniques how to do facial animations as part of custom animations??? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you can't do it implicitly through poser as an animation or bvh for sl to read. They could be custom animations with SL stock gesture-animations running together so you can get facial expressions along with a custom animation depending on what level you upload the animation at. Do you have any screenshots or anything?

SL automagically blends animations, so you can play two animations simultaneously, a custom anim, and a linden-supplied facial anim. There is no way to make custom animations featuring facial or finger movements.

find the express_whatever_emote default anims. those are your only facial emotes for now.
