Child prim particles not listening

I have a multi-prim build that has a script in the root prim that causes the entire build to move gradually along its Y-axis. At various points along its journey, I have the script "say" various things on a private channel so that a second script I have placed in a child prim can trigger a special particle system to turn on and off. The object moves along the Y-axis okay. I change the llSay to talk on channel 0 and I see the messages being generated at the appropriate times yet, when I change the llSay to talk on the private channel, the one on which the child prim script is listening, nothing seems to happen.

Are there any kind of rules of which I am aware that say a child prim can't listen to a root prim of the same object? Is there something with the particle system that may be keeping this from working? Any ideas of what may be going wrong or what I can do to further narrow things down would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Yep, objects can't hear themselves. A bit of explanation here, in the notes near the bottom:

Best to use llMessageLinked and link_message instead of llSay and listen.

Thank you. Maybe one day I will learn all the little "gotcha's" with scripting and I won't continue to ask stupid questions. I appreciate your indulgence until such time that that actually happens. <grins>

There is a LOT to learn. And didn't anybody ever tell you that there are no stupid questions? Only stupid people (who don't ask questions).
