Hello all, I'm Darkarma as you can tell. I've recently joined and I've gotten into the weapons making business. Now I'm turning my sights to shields. I'm fairly new to scripting and are learning slowly by salvaging scripts that I can find along the way.

I've hit a bit of a snag testing my weapons as one of the few place that allows weapons testing is frequented by people who constantly use the battle area to their advantage and kill me. So I've decided to invest time into making a shield.

My thought was... is it possible to make an object so its treated like a piece of land through scripting? The effect would be a hollow sphere surrounding the avitar and since the game consisders this sphere land, it would be safe guarded against just about any type of weapon a person can throw at it.

This kind of technique as well could be used to apply to many non violent uses too.

just do what I did. buy the Scion shield or other comparable shield and make an add-on for it.

What I did was make an invisible sphere that I would wear and would encompase me and the scion shield. With volume detect I have it sense a bullet going through it and rez a solid sphere around the attacker which would then kill them on collision. Thus teleporting them away. The Scion shield can then take care of the bullet that was incoming. Which it does rather well in most cases.

Word of warning though, the add-on takes a second or so to detect the bullet, find the owner, and rez the kill sphere. If the bullet was some kind of super shield breaker bullet and you still get killed the add-on will not kill off the attacker in time.

This won't help with your shielding script but the answer is no. We have no method of declaring a prim to be land. Land is a much more complex mesh than our prims and very much a drain on our video cards as it is. Looking through transparent land, with avs on the other side, would likely grind us to a dead halt.

Actually, non-physical prims are just that: scenery. That makes them as indestructible as land. This is what I use in my own shield: a big invisible non-physical prim that follows you around via SetPos and a Sensor function. IM me inworld and I'll send you a copy of this shield (please note it does not work over no-script land).

Either Man can enjoy universal freedom, or Man cannot. If it is possible then everyone can act freely if they don't stop anyone else from doing same. If it is not possible, then conflict will arise anyway so punch those that try to stop you. In conclusion the only strategy that wins in all cases is that of doing what you want against all adversity, as long as you respect that right in others.
