Periodic Table of the Primitives?

This seems to be the most appropriate section; if not would someone please refer me to the correct area.

The initial issue had to do with 'seams' between prims even when mathematics is precise.

I checked numbers carefully, relogged, read what Jeffrey Gomez said in the Builders forum ("is it just me" thread), and *still* it is possible to see seams under certain lighting conditions.

Alpha textures between prims help; as do carefully matching textures. But nothing seems to work reliably under variable lighting conditions. Surely there are some who are as annoyed by such things as I am.

This lead to researching primitives - in hopes of using a script to adjust reflectance properties.

So: Is this the best source of information on primitives available?

It is woefully incomplete, especially with regard to material properties, something that any top notch content creator would surely wish to understand.

There must be some Mendeleevs, Kelvins or Faradays among us, or at least one Professor Moriarty with the knowledge?

Local lighting breaks the seams between prims. So far, there is no sure-fire way to prevent it, although several master builders have techniques to hide it as much as possible. Mostly it's going to be a case of trial and error... and lots of practice.

Thank you for the response. :)

Exploring Local Lighting (and a few other relevant parameters) still resulted in occasional seams, sadly.

The issue today had to do with seams, but there are others. Such as rolling a wheel convincingly with physics and not a stiff, artificial looking rotation script.

Maybe I am being too formal. Yet, some people have made remarkable things with nothing more than a thorough understanding of prims and scripting. Those that have mastery seem to make by far the best content.

Would it not benefit everyone if the properties of different materials were documented? Or perhaps I missed it?

Others must have fully explored these issues by now. If not, I shall slowly put my own experiments and conclusions up for review.

Seems like the wiki needs a dedicated group of people that would be the Second life equivalent of this: http://www.royalsoc.ac.uk Are the original writers still active?
