I agree. Clearly this piece is intended to not be a "good photo" from teh standpoint of a traditional portrait. Even so though, it doesn't work for me. It might've worked better if the shadow was more naturally done, say deeper on camera left and just allowing the face to barely peek through on the carmera right. As it is, the shadow just looks like the face was blotted out.
