I'm a fan of games like battletech (mechwarrior), heavy gear, and so on. I thought, why not make a mech? I can sit inside it. Hopefully I'll be able to work out a script so I can stomp it around the map too :) It sports two heavy gatling cannons, one for each arm, and has twin-linked lasers in the torso. It looks sort of like a copyrighted mech, but it's different enough for it not to be a prob :) Here's two pics, one with Heero inside, and one standing on the ground beside it for scale. What do people think? (I haven't textured it yet though)

brilliant!

how do these things work? are they vehicles or attachments? if they are attachments, i imagine they have animations that lower the ground plain significantly below the character?

Excellent work. I have tred four times and your result is far beer than my own. Keep it up.

That is funny. I hadn't noticed that... Actually, I am pretty consistent in not hitting the"t" key unless I concentrate on it. Still, it is funny... and true in more than one sense.

Heero's Mech v1

They're attachments. The legs attach to the avatar's upper legs, and the body with arms attach to the spine. (The arms don't move about independently) The only problem is that I don't know how to make my avatar walk above the ground, so that at the moment, only the hip joints of the mech are above the ground, and the feet are a few meters below the ground, when attached to my avatar's body... Anyone have ideas as to how to make my avatar walk normally, but a few meters off the ground?

My solution has been to use a combination of llSetFloatHeight and a crude animation override script which I wrote back in August. A humanoid mecha using this technique is pictured below.
