Hehe I'm not too sure but I think it's actually distance from it on the ground.. I lagged under ground and slid along for a good few minutes.

Impressive.
I agree that it's definitely not an altitude reading though. For one thing, the arrow is pointing mostly level, and a little bit up. If you were hundreds of thousands of meters high, it would be pointing mostly down. Also, for what it's worth, even if it were altitude, it's definitely not maxed out. People have reached heights in the millions.
What's amazing is that 365979M is roughly what the distance across the world would be if all the sims were arranged in a diagonal line. One sim is 362M on the diagonal, and there are about 1000 of them. I don't know the exact sim count at this moment, but if it is 1011, then you nailed it exactly.
So, not only did you slide yourself, you apparently rearranged the world as you went. Nice work.
