Gray grid in the ground are said to be a different problem than the gray loading textures in objects.

They're trying to get us to use less textures..

LESS TEXTURES! MORE COLOURS!

When I see all the gray textures it destroys my ability to invest my ego in the avatar and experience myself as being in the virtual enviroment.

The immersion destroying effect lasts much longer than it takes for the textures to load.

I've had some of this too. I'm not quite sure either yet why even though I've set my Max. Bandwidth to 1000 kbps, why it mostly downloads sustained at around 600 kbps, sometimes a little higher. I know I have considerable more headroom.

I have been getting these issues as well.. textures slow to load. Had to set up my cathedral for a wedding last night and took this picture... got to love grey SL architecture.

It really is a horrible inconvenience too when shopping. I can't imagine the people detered because you enter a new region for that purpose and the vendors don't even rez.

Yeah, I get this too sometimes. Like you actually get the flutter and you WANT to go shopping...then you go! But about two minutes into that you realize this will become more like an adventure rather than shopping...and not in the cool Indie Jones style either.

I thought always those textures were bad things, (I map for JA and if i don't conclude the own made texture in my file, i get exactly the same view on the place the texture is placed) But if i see them, i right click on them and they rez within seconds.. Wish I could do that in JA

Yes, true on clicking. I tend to just single click on the picture of the thing I'm shopping for and it rezzes in. Also, haven't had problems with grey textures lately, myself.

Noob question, but is there any link between the prims/design of a sim and the speed of the texture loading? If so, is there maybe a "style guide" for builders to cut down on this problem?

It actually works to just move the mouse pointer so it is on top of the texture you want to rez. You don't have to click anything, just let the mouse stay there. It's weird because usually programs pretty much ignore mouse position when you're not clicking, but apparently SL watches where the mouse is.
