It's just basic vertex-based lighting. Unreal engine has dynamic lighting, but most lighting in Unreal games at the moment are baked and saved into the map as compressed textures. I thinkt he same goes for other games. Something SL can't do because of how dynamic it is, so you just get "hardware" lighting.

Ooooo! Pretty!!
Unfortunately, even on my system, Hardware Lighting is a big FPS killer. Now if we can only get LL to implement HDRI, Radiosity, caustic lighting.... ![]() _____________________

Devs correct me if I'm wrong, but.. Isn't the "Local Lighting" in SL currently a software-based solution?
I think I read a statement from a Linden somewhere that they are implmenting Hardware Lighting in the near future. If so, that will make "Local Lighting" practically free, as the hardware specifically designed to handle it has been unused in SL. Hardware lighting (called T&L for Transform and Lighting) was added to 3D video cards a long long time ago (With the first GeForce, IIRC). Sl does not take advantage of this feature or many other advanced rendering technologies which is why it has such performance issues. Moving to Hardware T&L should help SL a lot! 'Glow' objects should throw light better, and "Local Lighting" will probabaly become a standard for a lot of people. We'll see how LL implements this, but as you can see from Torleys' picture, it can have some great effects. Imagine your favorite club in SL and all the lighting actually DOING something. ![]() |

It is Hardware lighting, like torley said. Ben Linden posted a video on his blog, and seems that it might be coming out v1.9.1
![]() For the people who dont know what the new lighting will do, here is a little explenation: The current local lighting is all calculated by the CPU, so it makes things go real slow. But with the new local lighting, its calculated by the videocard, which doesnt slow things down as much, and everything looks GREAT! EDIT: Just found Torley's video of the Hardware Lighting and Flexy Prims ![]() BTW Torley, I loved the video ![]() _____________________

great idea since 1,7 i have been unable to use local lighting and my sims look dark and lesser quality and the effects I created are wasted... bring this soon... as local lighting is now unusable

Hardware lighting = AWESOMENESS. Five minutes til grid restart, I'll go and hook the hardware lights all over Miramare.
Although I seem to have some gripes like the lights disappearing if not moved... I guess that's fixable. _____________________
