Okay, so Poser seems to be the most popular program for animations and such. But can any 3d model making program be used, such as Maya or 3d Studio Max?

Any 3D package capable of exporting BVH files (which is just about all of them) can work, but it takes some doing. The reason people use Poser is because Poser is already set up the way SL wants it. If you want to use another package though, you can download the avatar models from the SL downloads page.
If you have a an interface between your 3D package of choice and Poser, such as Body Studio, you'll be able to import the Poser models directly (which is the best way to go, since they are already rigged). Otherwise, you'll need to use the OBJ's, which means you'll have to build your own skeleton. There's a sample BVH file in the download package to help you see how to rig it. You also might want to check out the new free alternative to Poser, Daz Studio, available at www.daz3d.com. It's still in Beta, so not all functions work and it seems to have a lot of bugs yet to be squashed, but all appearances are it will be a nice little program for what it is. Just about anything's better than Poser, anyway. _____________________
