I've got Poser 5 and I've downloaded all of the default BVH files for Second Life. But when I pull up 'Laugh' or 'Sad' or any of the default gestures that have facial expressions in Second Life, they do not have those facial expressions in poser. How do you create new facial expressions, and why do they not show up in these BVH's?

Unfortunately, SL's face and hand animations are separate entities from the BVH animations. We currently have no way to create new facial expressions in SL; we can only use existing ones.

Ironically, that's reassuring to know. That means I don't have to bother with them when I make my own animations and gestures.
Is there still a way to access them somehow? Access the ones that already exist, add a 'smile' to some other pose?

I've seen this done with scripts that play two animations at a time, or manually activating them which is a bit of a kludge. However, if you have the original BVH, perhaps the most effective way to guarantee you get a facial expression with the rest of your bodily moments is during the UPLOAD ANIMATION dialog, look very carefully at the options and you will see you can add a or a etc. to play with that anim.

When I upload an animation, I see an option to select one facial expression from a long list. E.g., kiss, smile, big smile, etc. Is that the only way we can control facial expressions?

Sadly SL does not support custom facial expressions, so... you're stuck :|
