Linden LabĀ®, creator of the acclaimed 3D world Second LifeĀ®, today announced the introduction of expressive puppeteering for Second Life avatars.... snip...The ability to add movement through the expressive puppeteering technology will be fully integrated into Second Life, allowing residents who desire a more advanced and realistic animation to enhance their interaction without having to access dedicated animation software programs. To create an animation, residents simply grab an avatar's body part and move it in the desired way. The avatar then "learns" the animation and gestures accordingly... snip... Linden Lab intends to introduce additional animation capabilities in the coming months to further enhance the realism of avatar interaction in the virtual world.

I never picked up this little piece of snack. Does anyone know when they plan to introduce it?

Discuss!

I've heard something along the lines of . . . by the end of the year. Nothing very immediate. Following an in-world animation editor, there is supposed to be lower-level body control via scripting, as well.

There was a discussion on a scripters email-list a few weeks back.

as they haven't changed animations since they introduced it in 1.4 I doubt it'll happen any time soon. If it does, I bet an undisclosed amount of L$ that it'll break the current system and not work as well as the free programs already out there.

While it may "open up creation to the casual user" and poser animations might "still be superior" I doubt it'll help our sales at all.

Any ideas on when this will be available?

No need for poser or any of the other animation tools anymore it seems.

You'll still need Poser or Avimator. LL says the puppeteering method is not meant to compete with keyframers. It's meant to handle simpler or more spontaneous stuff.

Would like to see it soon. But other items I'd like to see sooner (privacy tools, better physics, less lag). I can wait for the puppets.

I would wait on that idea until we see how it works. They even fully admit themselves that uploaded animations will be superior, and that they will be compatible with inworld created anims. Whatever that means.

While it would be nice to have hand and facial movements, "grabbing" limbs is never a good idea, especially with SL's limited range of motion.

Even if it's great, there will still be a demand for couple animations. And I think it will be like building... anyone can build, but there are very few that can make a quality build.

Hmmm....

Given that it fails to break anything, this will be brilliant. Expressive puppeteering - the ability to spontaneously grab a hand and slap someone who just grabbed their hand to pinch my butt. I like it.
