Is poser the program used to make a shape outside the restrictions for SL sliders? I am trying to make an avi that needs real wide shoulders but be stickman thin is this a possibility?

Poser is not the tool for this. The only thing you can upload into sl from poser is the bvh file which runs animations on the avatar figure. Movements only, not shapes.
I believe the way for you do what you describe is with prims, including invisiprims that will hide parts of your avatar, but I am not an expert on this kind of build. See http://www.lslwiki.com/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=Invisiprim Sylvia |

Max the shoulder width, min the body thickness. You also may have to play with muscularity.
That is as close as you'll get aside from invisiprims. |
