I understand how to make a human avatar, as they are the default species. But how do you go about making a non-humanoid avatar (a furry for example)?

Furries (and other non-humans) are made through use of prims. Prims (and constructs of many prims) can be painstakingly arranged and sculpted, and then grouped for form a "hat" and a "backpack" and a "shoe" etc. These items can then be positioned on your character, attached to various points on your body, thus "bulking out" the body part. Many of these avatr "kits" can be purchased for less than L$1000 (I know of a store in Taco).

Many costumed avatars seem to have scaled down body parts, under their new "parts".. so by giving your human avatar really tiny feet, or a really small head, you can attach a relatively normal "part" in it's place, without fear of the human's part showing through.

Then it's only a matter of colouring your "human" inside, so that it blends with the other parts. Most furries seem to use uploaded "Skin" images.
