Today I got Poser 4, and started playing with it. I get one of two results when previewing the anim in SL:
"Failed to initialize motion..." or something like that.
AND
A female avatar that twitches slightly, no matter how I do the sliders.
What am I doing wrong? Ive read that I need to use Poser 2 figures but I dont have any...

Poser 2 Figures?
09-06-2004 04:38
Hi - I too am interested in this, as I have Poser 5 and version 5 export to bvh into SL causes weird actions. Version 4 figures seem more reliable, but still a little shakey with hand motions, etc. I tried a version 2 figure and it did not work well either. Maybe there is something I am doing wrong. I try very hard to learn all options. Overwhelming at first, but getting easier as time goes by. Now, to just get them to animate correctly in SL Any advice or assistance is greatly appreciated

Must be something in the air. I got Poser yesterday as well, and I'm getting the same results. I'm wondering if there's specific parameters that need to be met for an anim to import. Any help would be appreciated. -Ghoti

Search the forums, folks... the answers are here. I got it to work on the fifth try. Part of the answer is to use Poser 2 figures due to certain bits we dont model the same in Poser and SL. -Ghoti

Make sure there are no keyframes in your animation for fingers, toes, buttocks, genitals, or eyes. If there are, delete them.

Yes indeed... and as someone mentioned, the Poser 2 models do not have those bits to animate, so use Poser 2 models, and it seems to work great.
Now I jsut need to figure out Poser more. Hehehe... bought the online version with just the PDF manual... makes it hard to do and read at the same time, but that's what printouts are for! Yay!
Too much fun for words. Already making my first kissy furniture. =)

Well, in Poser 5, (and I got it Sunday so my terminology will be vague), you will see a control panel popup thing. Click it and its a pallette of things to open. I think the top one is 'figues'. Click on that one and it will expand. You'll see folders with different labels. Find Poser 2 and double click. A variety of figures are there. Male, female, adult and child... and various resolutions too, I think. Double-click the figure you want to use and it should load. There might be an easier way to get at these too.
Sorry for any inaccuracies... like I said, I'm a Poser newbie.
Hope this helps!

I am under the impression Poser 4 fails to make a fully standard BVH file, and isn't compatible with SL. I never could get Poser 4 to make anything that worked, at any rate.
Ended up having to get Poser 5... expensive!

Using Poser 2 Characters
09-07-2004 21:00
I have discovered that using Poser 2 characters works quite well ... small problems have to do with my lack of knowledge of how things work. For example, raising a character off the ground by lifting the hips looks horrendous in Poser 5 character view ... looks like he's really stretched. But, when played back, it displays perfect. Export bvh or export to avi both display well. I started exporting bvh files and importing into Life Forms 4 for checking. If I can successfully export to Life Forms 4, and the character is animated the way I want it, then it "should" work fine when uploaded to SL. So far, I've uploaded some pretty crazy anims, with only just a few that work like I expected. Things are getting better now, though. I'm using a 14-day demo of Life Forms 4, and have little intention of buying at this point, but it has already helped me learn a lot about animating and exporting bvh files from Poser 5. It might help you too I want to thank all of you here for helping me learn more about how to animate characters. When I first came here, I was at quite a loss. Now, I have a clue and a place to start working from, as well as some direction. You guys are the best! )

Oh! what is Life Forms 4? Ohhh.... I googled it... EXPENSIVE!! Holy mackerel! What does this add that Poser can't do?
