I've been tossing around ideas with a friend of mine in game on possible ways of implementing quadrapedal avatars... dogs, cats, horses, or even mythical creatures. What I was wondering is if anyone else has done this, and could provide pointers, highlight common pitfalls before I find them out on my own.
I appologize if this has been asked before, I have yet to discover the "search" button for these forums.

You can, but they wont move unless you do some scripting. Since it's an attachment, you're limited in options to make them move. The most viable is to use multiple fixed frames which you make visible/invisible by changing the texture at the appropriate time. Animated frames would look kindof bad tho' for legs, so you might consider having wheels or something instead of backlegs ))) Azelda

What about making an animation that puts your avatar on all fours, then add attachments to make it look like an animal? Problem is it would just slide around unless you could find a way to trigger animations starting/stopping with movement starting/stopping. Almost like a vehicle works...

We've been looking at a few of these ideas. The working theory is that an animation that has our avatars on all fours would limit us somewhat in size. Fine for a dog or a cat, but it would make avatars like horses somewhat small...
Maybe a shetland pony? ^_^.

I made an all fours animation last week, it's pretty interesting. Doesn't quite look animal like, because your avatar is still relatively human in shape, it just looks like a human on all fours.

now, if i were an animator i would keep this to myself for now, but i had an idea to make the whole animal thing work.
i know you can make limbs twist and bend in weird ways with animations.. so why not bend them to animalistic positions first? then add a walking (and running) animation?
as far as being low.. again, the animator comes in handy. position the avatar higher off the ground. also, within SL, you can make everything thin and long (i.e., arms, legs, feet, etc).
maybe this would work?
