I would like to create special non-animated poses to go along with the boats and motorcycles I build and sell. Basicly just a static sit pose animin I can put into the content of the prime prim.

Is there a free software program out there that I can use to this end?

Thanx,
Mannie

You can pick up several free sit poses in world. Try Yani's Junkyard to start.

I'm also interested in free pose software. If anyone knows of anything out there, I'd be very grateful!

Well I know of a free posing software called "DAZ Studio", which you can find on "Http://www.daz3d.com" and its a free posing and animation software. It's very simple software, but some features aren't quite usable. One reason I'm not making myself animations is the fact that you can't export into .bvh format which makes it impossible to upload your poses/animations anyways without some kind of .bvh converter that I have yet to find. But yes, DAZ studio is a great, free posing program that has the capabilites of Poser, just not the export format. If anyone decides to search for a converter, and happens to find a multi codec or multiplatform OBJ or pz2 to .bvh converter, please let me know in game, as I will probably not be checking this forum topic much. I would be very grateful.

Hope this helps,

Anyone can get Poser for free, pirated. But for those of us who want a legitimate copy, we've got to shell out tons of money.

Personally I think that pirating software is wrong...

However...

I believe in the "try-before-you-buy" mentality.

E.G. You get poser 6 pirated, you try it out, if you like it, GO BUY IT!!! And be sure that you do. But if you don't like it, just uninstall it and don't waste your money.

I thought Blender worked with BVH motion files. That's free. But I have never really used it.

I got Poser 5, new in the box, from Amazon.com - for 85$US, and it is working fine for making SL animations. So, IMO shelling out big $ for Poser 6 is not necessary... YMMV :)

Good luck!

I wasn't talking about a pirated copy, I just had an extra one (past tense b/c i sold it already, sry). On a kind of unrelated note, can you animate non-avatar objects?

The short answer to that is no. Theoretically is it possible? I am working on taking BVH from poser for misc objects and moving identical object in SL..so far the idea has just burned a hole in the back of my head though.....On another slightly related subject if somebody just happens to have a prim person laying around with the same joints, and size if possible, as our avatars please get a hold of me :)..i will be more than willing to pay.

Oasis, if you haven't already, take a look at Jeffrey Gomez's BVH-to-Prim Importer. :)

I guess it is theoretically impossible to animate any objects by bvh except avatar attached in this system. Plz clarify between animation and uploading process. ;)

Sry Seagel :)... you cannot upload BVH for other objects in game.. but it is possible through scripting to hack apart BVH and use the data.

Poser costs
01-03-2006 09:42
Well, way back when... before it became e-frontier, it was Curious Labs and before that MetaCreations (which went under), Poser was distributed with many computer graphics and animation magazines as a freebie. That was Poser 2, and from what I recal Poser 3 was likewise distributed via the same channels in the UK and parts of Europe that way. So magazines from the 1997-2000 era, if fully intact, might have such. I believe there is no upgrade path for those, however.

If you are an artist or student, e-frontier offers a discount rate for their latest and greatest Poser 6. I started on the free path and upgraded when necessary, so have no idea on what is available today. I barely remember enough to dabble with it today, but the interface is far simpler today than it was way back when. I may even have the original disc around somewhere, but as it wasn't necessary for upgrading at some point, I probably relegated it to the circular recepticle.

Some other professions may count in the artist category and contacting e-frontier might be of help or even just perusing their website. There are times that I wish that older versions of software, no longer supported, would be made available even as compiled binaries, so that it can be tried out. Not to be for most companies, however....

I recently got a copy of Poser Artist, which is basically Poser 4, for $90, which is a lot cheaper than getting Poser 6 for $250. Since the avatars use Poser 2 models, you should have no problems using that.

Well, outside of actually using Poser.

Mannie, if you just want to make poses (no animations...yet), you can try out the pose editing software i'm working on: /52/cd/81886/1.html

it's still early stage, but it will let you edit and save poses that are compatible with SL. the interface is still a bit tricky since you can't move the parts by clicking and dragging (you have to use sliders), but that will be fixed very soon.

Anim8or is another good one, especially if you're just trying to import from one file type so you can export to .BVH
