Ive been reading about creating hand animations, and it still seems like they cant be done, but it also seems like they're working on getting in.

So I was wondering if anyone has any information on how soon or long it might be till they get it implemented.

There's a piece about hand animation in the FAQ for New Animators:

This FAQ is a great place to start when you have an animation question.

Right now they, and facial animations, can't be done, because the .bvh format doesn't support them. Morphs from linden-made gestures are the substitute, and there's no news I've heard about this changing anytime soon. However, Linden Lab has said an upcoming version will have an in-world pose maker, which, while it doesn't solve this problem right away, is a step in the right direction. There's no real timeframe to speak of so far, though, so you'll just have to be patient.

Once there is an in-world editor, the BVH format's limitations are no longer a roadblock to things like this, so it should open the door to a lot more capabilities.
