If you're simply looking for a free 3D modeling and animation package, tehre are a few out there. Blender and Anim8tor come to mind. Neither are very good, but they are free.
If you want to do SL animations though, you are going to need Poser (unless you know enough about animation to rig a character in another program EXACTLY as Poser does it). Poser is a fairly silly program IMO, but it is what is used for SL animations. It's not free, but it is pretty cheap. You can get Poser Artist for around $100 US. Currently, there is a copy of Poser 4 on Ebay for around $35 (2 days left on auction so price could go up), and you may be able to find it elsewhere if you look around.
