You cannot export your avatar directly to a generic file like .obj or whatever for use in another program.
However, there is available the base avatar mesh in .obj format made for use in whatever 3D program you'd like to use to create animations. Since you've posted here in the animation forums, I assume that is your interest. The meshes are here: http://secondlife.com/community/avatar.php |

There is, or used to be, a website that advertised a physical implementation of your avatar, using a 3D printer. I am not sure, but I suppose they use something like libSecondLife to grab all the data.
I have no idea what it would take to translate that data to 3ds, or how to get it back into SL if that is your aim. _____________________

You want to search for an Open GL capture app and snapshot your graphics buffer. Expect to do a lot of cleanup. Best results come when you turn off the graphics you don't need in the render settings.
