OK, I've gotten to the point where I understand how to make poses that keep the avatar's feet planted in the same spot.

How the heck do you make them move about? You know, dancing or walking whatever? My avatar looks like it has St. Vitus' Dance when I try

making any kind of complex dance probably requires a motion capture suit to look half decent. as for walks...what software are you doing your anims in? poser has a built in walk/run designer which will do most of the work for you.

if your legs seem glued to the ground and you're in poser, try going to figure > inverse kinematics, and unchecking them for the feet. then they can move around like any other part. inverse kinematics is sexy, but sometimes you don't want it on

Turning off inverse kinematics for the feet is usually a bad idea. Inverse kinematics keep the feet planted. What you should do to move the entire body around is to select the body overall (poser defaults to having a circle around the figure to select) instead of selecting only parts of the body.

That said, this isn't how to animate a walk, just dancing or something where the avatar returns to the initial position when the animation is done. For walking, you animate them walking in place; the avatar's position is changed by the SL client when the character is walking around. Otherwise, I think you need to use a script to snap them to the position at the end of the animation when the animation stops playing.
