FYI. Their website is a bit overloaded at the moment. Try again in a while.

"From Blender's site: 'Just in time for Siggraph 2004, the Blender 2.34 release! Packed with new features, from particle force fields and deflection, to advanced UV mapping, ramp shading and more. Read the full list of additions and changes in 2.34. Here you can download Blender 2.34 for all platforms.'"

The only experience I've had with Blender is when I was looking for an open-source replacement for Calagari TrueSpace, a 3D modeling package, which is why I'm familiar with it. Like TrueSpace, Blender is a full-featured 3D modeler, billed as the next-generation GUI version of the old classic POV-Ray. While both TrueSpace and Blender have evolved to be able to do what Poser does as a dedicated package, it is my anecdotal belief that the process is more difficult. I say anecdotal, as I've never tried to create a human animation in Blender or TrueSpace before, rather I'm just repeating what I've heard.

In short POV-Ray, Blender, and TrueSpace are 3D modeling packages, whereas Poser is a 3D modeling package optimized for animating figures.

As soon as I have some time, I plan to attempt a human animation in Blender and will post a comparison of the difficulty to do the animation in each. If it turns out to be successful, I'll turn it into a tutorial.

Oh really! I used truespace from version 2 to 4.2!

Most of the artwork in my in world gallery is done using that program.

Wow! I'm a TrueSpace 5 user! :D

Maybe you could tell us what you think the relative advantages and disadvantages to TrueSpace relative to Poser are. I could then follow up with a comparison on Blender.

I taught classes in trueSpace 1 and 2 :) It's a cool program. Used to be rather buggy but it had one of the most beautiful scanline renderers out at the time.

I've never played with Blender but you definitely can't beat the price! :)
