What you need to do is this:

1. Find out how many frames the GIF has. You'll need to use a GIF making program to scan the file. Let X = the number of frames.
2. Save the GIF file's frames individually using the same program.
3. You need to create a file in PS that has N² equal-sized square portions, where N²=>X.
4. Copy and paste each of the GIF frames in the new file and save as regular TGA.
5. Now, go to SL and make a prim about the size you want.
6. Upload the TGA you made and drag it onto one side of the prim.
7. Now, you need to write a script that only displays part of the texture, namely the part with a single frame on it.
8. Add to the script the ability to change that frame as often as the speed of the animation you wish.

I'm not so good with my scripting, so parts 7 and 8 would take some trial and error for me, but this is the gist of it.

Having Problems

I came across this thread and went to the site to try it out. After uploading the gif images they come out not so good. If the animation is 4 images 2 of them are messed up and how do you save the images from the site to your computer. When I right click to save it does not give the option to save but only info about Quick Time. The creator says to simply right click and save but it don't work.

Hi Lucie. It sounds like the file you're trying to download is not a GIF, but a quicktime movie. If Quicktime won't let you save the movie, there's not much you can do. The tool Serendipity mentioned is only for GIF's. Quicktime movies, AVI's, MPEG's, etc. work on different principles than simple animated GIF's.

Of course, there are always ways to capture anything displayed on your screen or played by your speakers. If it can be outputed, it can be recorded. Sorry though, I won't go into details on that since it's likely the owner of the particular movie in question doesn't want you doing what you're trying to do. Hopefully no one else will share these methods either.

Generally speaking, whether it's a GIF or anything else, unless you see statement from the owner that it's free to copy and use, leave it alone. If you ever want any help making your own animated images, post a question over on the texture forum and I'll be happy to whip up a tutorial for you.
