I am wondering how to do something, but since I haven't seen anyone do it, I am nto sure it is already done. I would like minor interactions with another avatar. For example, reach out and touch someone's shoulder, cheek etc., pat them on the back or whatever. I assume the animation would be simple enough to write, but are there ways to "approach avatar" or "face avatar" or "go behind avatar" understood, that no matter what, they could always queer the deal and move their avatar, but hey a real person can do that, and if I go to pat them on the back of the head and they turn around I will pet their face (I can accept that) I would assume with the war games and such there would be some way of independent interacting, such as punching or kicking someone. This would be similar except for not shoving their avatar in the process.

The most well-known of this kind of interaction is hugging; that's a pretty common freebie, first made by Francis Chung. It's done with a scripted attachment. The person wears the attachment and says the command, indicating their target as part of the command, and the animation plays.
A number of animators (including myself) have extrapolated on that idea to make a bunch of different interactions. The limitation is in facing; although you can move an av in script, you cannot change the direction it is facing. Thus, for this to work the person must manually face in the right direction.

Johan, I am aware of the hug/kiss etc attachments, but it requires the animation of the second avatar. I am trying not to have to animate them, merely reach out and touch them.

So you only play one animation, not both. Same approach though.
