Are there any Free open source programs like poser that can handle animations in SL?

Blender could do it, but you'll need to be fairly 3D savvy to make it work. You'll have to build a skeleton that matches the SL avatar skeleton exactly, not a simple task for the novice.

Daz Studio is the free alternative equivilent to Poser. It's still in beta, so it's a little buggy & a bit incomplete, but it's got a lot of promise. DAZ Studio is more or less a copy of Poser, so in that regard I can't help but hate it every bit as much as I hate Poser, but I gotta respect it for what it is, a perfect free alternative.

I usually hate "cheapo" 3D packages like Blender & Poser, but I'm a big fan of the DAZ people. The character models they have available for sale are really quite stunning, and their software is great for what it is.

Hmmm looks to be a good proggy for sure Chosen. Next question, how to convert the resulting files into bvh? Daz doesn't have this native.

Daz Studio, as I understand it, is done by some of the same people behind Poser (so it seems). It's strange to me that it doesn't have BVH support, and I could find no plugin for it either.

Compounding the problem is the fact they encrypt or otherwise obfuscate the data - so I can't write a BVH exporter for it without figuring out their algorithm, coding system, etc... and I'm not in the mood to do that.

Anywho, Blender is a decent alternative, but only if you want to spend considerably more time getting each animation to work.

Your best bet, even if it's Poser, is Poser Artist. It's a little over the $100 price point, but will almost certainly save you the hassle of debugging your animations later.

And believe me, if a cheap coder/creator like me endorses it, it's probably worth it. :D

Can Poser be used by someone who never even figured out Photo shop yet?

Yes. It's designed with the "casual user" in mind - which is one of the reasons I love to hate it. :D

Poser leaves a lot of the hard stuff out entirely, so you should be fine.
