Ahh...
Well, the basics can be accessed by picking "Appearance" under the "Edit" menu. More advanced looks are created in external programs like Photoshop and uploaded (for simple clothes/ skin) or created by building and attached. You can also buy parts pre-made and add them to your avatar.
