I am working on a project using robots to simulate physician/patient encounters for the purpose of developing asynchronous communication skills training. Does anyone know where i can find instructions for programming robot avatars to converse and interact with real people driven avatars?

Doing a Google search for

second life aiml

produces some results that are probably related.

Similar phrases such as

second life chatbot

and such placed in Google will probably work out too.

I think there is a group called Metaverse Mentors that was working with Honda on a chatbot system to greet noobs.

By the way, the Animation Tips forum is probably not the best choice of places to post such a question.

Also you might try joining the libsecondlife group inworld and doing a web search for libopenmetaverse.

I think there is a bot project called "Alice" which is in this general area - try the scripting forum or Residents Answers.

METABolt (http://www.metabolt.net/) has ALICE built in, or rather a version of ALICE.
