lag lag lag

take a deep breath and go get a cup of coffee. SL is usually borked at the weekend, because that's when there's most people online - consequently more lag. Look for quieter areas and sims to enjoy for a while, there's a whole SL world of beautiful creations mostly unexplored out there

Try turning your graphics detail to the lowest setting in SL.

One thing you have to consider with SL is that it is, in itself, really not all that laggy. But there is one thing going on here that doesn't happen in other MMORPG type games/environments.
When you have a normal game online, you are working only with graphics and models that have been carefully built by people working with a good knowledge of what causes lag. They are well trained and well paid to keep an eye on the whole "scene" and they keep track of total elements. (Think of it like "prim" limits, but it is like that PLUS, graphics limits along any one line of sight combined with effect limits and all of that). In SL, though, you have a bunch of people who don't really know about these concepts, not to mention using design techniques that follow them. Sure - we're limited in prims, but many textures that people upload are 4-10 times the size they really need to be to get the job done. Plus, even though you are limited to certain number of prims per lot - people do not always limit the number of prims "near" each other. (This is why it's always laggier on the ground - because there tends to be a lot more prims down on ground level - in all directions - and not just on your plot). Plus that massive ground prim with all kinds of angles and vertices on it. So, true - while we can ask that Linden Labs do what they can to reduce the amount of lag going on, we also have to be careful. Because the best and easiest way for them to get rid of lag is limit scripts (which is already in the works, dag gummit) limit the amount of texture memory, adding line-of-sight prim limits and other restrictions that limit creativity for the "layperson". It would all be manageable, but it would take a lot more learning for everyone involved to be able to create stuff. People would have to consider that that high rez skin they are making needs to be a lot smaller (and not look as good) or else the person won't be able to wear any clothes with it because they are out of texture memory. Yep. Lag sucks. But be careful about complaining about it too much here in places where a Linden might see it. They might just fix it - and then half of the stuff in world suddenly become worthless because no one will be able to rez/use/wear it. |

There are also many different things that people call "lag," some of which have little to do with SL directly. Unlike a lot of virtual environments that you may be used to, SL handles a quite a bit of its graphics on the client end instead of doing most of it on a remote server. As a result, there's a lot more data passed back and forth every time people make a change that affects asset servers, or as they move from one sim to another, for example. Bandwidth can be a serious issue, and so can the speed and the amount of memory on your graphics card. If you're on a wireless hub with several other people, or if your ISP has heavy traffic, SL can slow to a crawl for you. I have had people in a club complain that their dance animations are slow and choppy, even though I'm dancing next to them with no lag at all.

Without more information on your particular system specs, we can only provide general information. Try posting your detailed system specs, including your video card and driver. (The triangles sounds like a rendering issue and there is a fix for that.) You can get your systems specs by going to: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest Choose "Second Life" and click the button. Copy and paste the results from that page to here. |
