Please help change avatar

You probably get lots of newbies here, but everyones gotta start somewhere. Id like to make my avatar a completely different model than what he is. Can anyone help?

You can't change the 'avatar' which is the humanoid shape that you can adjust with the appearance sliders. You can change your avatar by covering it with prims which are the basic building blocks in Second Life. If you see any inhuman avatars walking around those are probably prim covered avatars.

What are you wanting to change it into?

You can change a lot of aspects of avatars with the appearance editor.

You have a set of different avatars in your inventory, in the library folder, that you can wear by dragging onto your avatar.

Welcome, Pho. Yes, you can be anything including a tiny insect to a 15m tall mecha and beyond. Some avatars can be accomplished by adjusting the shape and wearing skin, hair, and clothing/accessories that you like. Others, for instance Tinies, use special (included) animations to make the avatar body move and fit into the desired shape.

For a human you can take advantage of special deals for new residents at many shops (I think Sin Skins does one). I believe there's a stickied thread in this forum with a list. Experimenting with your own shape is best. A good first step might be to go into Appearance and "Make Outfit" with everything you have on so you can easily get back to that look if something goes awry. Then you can make a new body part right click the Body Part folder "create new - shape" for instance. Wear the shape then play around with the sliders. Save the shape.

A skin can be bought, made, or found as a freebie.

There's lots of hair around to try out until you get the hang of things and want to buy something in your preferred style.


For non-human avs you could try out the free and low-cost avatars at Grendel's Children, then you'll see how things work and can either continue to purchase or learn to build your own.

Most people use their self-expression in blending things from different places to make a unique av, rather than building everything themselves.

a small comment, because noone mentioned the shortcuts
when you have a compleete avatar in your inventory as a folder, then you can switch -everything- to your basic-avatar by rightclicking on the folder in the inventory and choose option 'replace outfit'.
You can also choose to supplement your current appearence with any unique items in the folder. You then use the menu-item 'add to outfit'.
A somewhat weird option 'Take off Items' will create an opputunity for you to be arrested for indesent behaviour (unless you are at a place where such actions are regarded apropiated... and theres a l o t of those in sl ^^)

To get a 'testdrive alternative avatar' go to any of the freebie areas and look in the boxes for soemthing like a fox dog og cartoon charachter, there are m a n y!
