I'm 100% new to SL and working with animations and 3D so this may sound completely silly but... Can I make my own walk animation? My avatar's walk is so... gaunty and unladylike.

Yes you can. You can get what's called an Animation Overrider. There are some good ones that are free, and you just drop the animation you want into the object and put the name into a text file and you're done.
