Kit, your human avatar shape must be customized in-world.
This means right-clicking yourself, choosing appearance and using the sliders to make your desired shape.
Now, if you want a more elaborate avatar in terms of shape there are literally TONS of avatars you can buy (e.g. Mecha, furry/anthro, cartoon character, etc.) that use prims (in-world building blocks) for shape creation. Or you can learn to build and create something unique of your own.
