Is there a free verison of poser or an SL Specific version of poser? If not SL should do something like that, a contract with poser for only SL users, and it can only be used for SL animations. Id love to create poses for SL, and ive tried to free trial and gotten the hang of it, but its hard for some of us to afford the... over $250 program!

Okay, one thing at a time here:

DazStudio is a free alternative to Poser currently in development. You can download the beta from www.daz3d.com. It's currently far from a finished product, but it looks like it will be nice (for what it is) when it's done.

Use Poser 4, Poser Artist, or Poser 5. Poser 6 is currently incompatable.

That's a nice thought, but unfortunately there's no way to make it "only used for SL animations". BVH is a standard format for digitally describing the motion of a skeleton, and its use as imported data is widespread among 3D applications (SL is just one such application among many).

Poser Artist is currently selling new on amazon.com for $92.99 US. It will do everything you need to do for SL. A hundred bucks may or may not be a lot of money to you, but keep in mind that that is a REDICULOUSLY LOW price for a 3D animation package. To help put things in perspective, consider that the two most popular 3D applications, Maya and 3D Studio Max, cost about $6000 and $3000 respectively. Now obviously Poser can't do even 1% of the things these other 2 programs can, but since all you want it to do is one thing anyway (create BVH files), a hundred bucks ain't a bad deal.

Anyway, if you really can't afford it, DAZ Studio will get up to par sooner or later and it's free. Until then all you can do is wait.

Or, you know, NOT steal it, which is better.

Stealing software is bad, mmmkay? No stealing.

I've heard some people have had success using Blender, which is also free. I am not, however, aware of the specifics of this. A seach on the forums here might turn it up, though.

How about not? i dont believe in that! Its wrong! Do you sell stuff in SL? Well how about this? You sell something that I think i can recreate, so i make it, and sell it for less, there goes your sales... thats basically what happens when u steal software! Or i make a better version than yours and give it out free, or something!

I tried Blender for about a week (a couple years ago) and nearly lost my down-past-there mane of hair in frustration *pull pull pull*. It can do a lot of things to be sure, but the makers of Blender decided to reinvent the interface wheel. It's like driving a car that you steer with the stickshift and shift with the wheel, and the lumbar adjustment is where the clutch is. (Caveat: this is just one former-user's opinion!)

Thanks for the link, Chosen. Will have to check it out.

Incidentally, has anyone developed export scripts for GMax? That does skeletal animations, though I haven't messed much with that aspect of it. Exporting from it to other programs is usually a hella pain.

Remember the important lesson everyone: stealing intellectual property from the creator is wrong.

So if you're going to steal Poser, find someone who owns it and steal their copy from them. You get the software you want, the other user goes and buys themselves a replacement copy and uses that, the content creastor gets reimbursed for both licenses -- everyone wins.

;)

That still falls under my first suggestion.
