Hello,
My opinion is that one of the best, future-oriented "feature" of SL (in comparison to competition Croquet, Wonderland, Ogoglio,...) is .. the avatar "system": diverse, rich, flexible, off-the-shelf, nice-looking, customizable, etc...
I would like to build a front-end which could use the same avatar system for accessing SL servers and also another virtual worlds platform (which also uses BVH and OBJ formats). For the explained above reason one alternative would be to use the open source SL client and take out of it the avatar editing/customization tools and enter it into the new client software.
What do you think guys ? Is it feasible ? Does it makes sense ? Do you see other alternatives I should consider ? (at this time I don't know of any other avatar editor so rich as the SL one, at least for BVH/OBJ).
Thanks in advance for your support! -michel

This rings a bell... Not where I first heard about it but from: From: New York Times, October 10, 2007 I.B.M. and Linden Lab, the creator of Second Life, think it’s time to free the avatars.
At the Virtual Worlds Conference and Expo at San Jose, Calif., the two companies are announcing plans to develop open standards that will allow avatars to roam from one virtual community to the next. The goal is let a person create a digital alter-ego that can travel to many virtual worlds, keeping the same name, look and even digital currency. ... From: someone I.B.M. also hosted a meeting on Tuesday in San Jose with a group of companies and some university researchers to discuss open standards for virtual worlds and plans for establishing an organization to promote the technologies needed for an interoperable 3D Internet. The companies included Cisco, Google, Linden Lab, Sony, Intel, Multiverse, Microsoft, Motorola, Philips and others. Seems you aren't the only one who thinks that's a good idea?

Well the avatar editing tools only get you so far. I refer to the one you get when you right click on yourself to change appearance. At most you get the basic linden avatar with basic linden clothes and hair. There really isn't any animation creation done through the SL tools either. A lot of what makes really nice avatars here is by uploaded files such as skin and clothing textures, uploaded animations, and attachments built with prims. Creating an avatar in sl for the average person is a matter of purchasing different things made by other people.
