A couple of questions from a newb animator

I've successfully uploaded my first (very bad) dance, and I have some questions.

1. I know that we loop animations when we upload. But in SL, I seem to see lots of dances that are a lot longer than 30 seconds looped. Do some people have chims that play six or seven animations in sequence? Or am I just being fooled by very good loops?

2. For looping, I guess that means my frame 1 better look like my frame 900. Um, how do you copy frame 1 to frame 900 in Poser? Alt-click-drag works copying from frame 1 to 2, but I have a tougher time using this method to a frame not near frame 1. Edit/copy/paste doesn't seem to do anything at all.

3. Are 'pose balls' just very short animations? 2 or 3 frames, with the final one looped repeatedly (using the in-out-100% technique I've read about here)?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Ricky! Welcome to SL :)

There's a few really good dance devices on the market. Personally, I feel Crystalshard Foo makes the best one. It's called Dance-Foo. She makes them both in wearable and club versions. I use the personal version, myself.

Actually, I believe you would not make 1 and 900 the same, but rather 900 is just one step shy of what 1 is, so that it loops smoothly. If 1 and 900 are the same, it would look like a slight pause as it played the two same frames one after the other. More experienced animators will have more to say about this, I'm sure.

I'm not too sure about poseballs.

Thanks for your reply. Yup, I've seen those Foo-balls at clubs. Do they store more than one animation and then play the animations seriatim? I'm trying to figure out how to construct a dance that's more than 30 seconds long.

actually make 900 the same as 2 ... 1 should be the reference T pose and it gets tossed when you upload. also you can do the 2 as a slightly adjusted t pose , i.e. adjust all the joints a hair, this will make your animation locked and no other movements like the head turning when you look at something will occur. Then just use the percent in dial in the uploader to go past it and start on frame 3. Obviously you'd want 3 to be the same as 900 in this case.

Another question...my first pose looks great in SL, and I can hold it indefinitely. But a friend says she can't seem to get it to stay longer than five seconds when using it as an override. What do I need to do to fix that?

are we talking about a still pose here or an animated stand? either way I guess it is probably the priority level. try upping it to 3 or 4.

Er, I dunno the difference between a still pose and an animated stand, but I think we're talking still pose. This animation has just four frames; the last two are identical, and it loops on the final one. OK, I'll try increasing the priority level.

So do these foo-balls allow one to put several dances in the dance ball and then run them serially, to give the illusion of a longer dance?

The foo balls are loaded with a series of dances which are either played sequentially as they end or you can use manual overrides to, for intance, make sure that a dance is played for XX seconds.

The foo balls give you quite a bit of control as to what happens and when.

Ask Fionne when you see her in-game. She has one and you can maybe use hers to test any sequential "dances" you might be thinking of uploading.
