Hello,

I searched the forums and found a post from 7 months ago about an animation that can be used to make quadruped/4 legged AV's. Basically put the AV into a standing on all fours position.
I was wondering if anyone could help me find animations of this nature. I'm looking to make 4 legged AV's and would like to find Standing, Walking, Running, Jumping, and Sitting animations for 4 legged animal AV's.

Thanks,

-Wolph

I'd be interested in this too... but note that different animals have different gaits, so "four legged walking" could still look really wrong depending in the kind of animal you had in mind. It might be necessary to make multiple gaits. Note also that almost any 4-legged animals have extremely short "legs," highly elongated "feet," and are walking on their very short "toes". Also, I don't know if the neck will bend far enough that there's any chance Mouselook would still work, but that would be great too.

I myself would like a cat av. Not an anthropomorphic cat, just a cat. Given the limitations in SL, I imagine it would have to be something puma sized, at least, but that's ok... though someday I'd like to see more options in av sizing and components (tails, for example, or the wing transformation for arms).

I would expect to pay a fair chunk of change for the animations, particularly if they were done well. I can make the av parts myself.

I (somewhat) recently saw someone walking around the WA as a centaur, but I can't remember who it was. If that lovely person reads this thread, perhaps he/she can offer some tips...

PS. I forgot to mention, all four legs appeared to animate "properly" (at least when walking).

Clio Asani, Montmartre's resident jester, is the biggest maker of centaur AVs that I know of (and she knows at least one other person who does centaur AVs). If memory serves me correctly, the legs can move and such, but it's not a true four-legged animation and she's as interested in figuring out how to do it as the rest of us. :)

(You could ask her in-world and she could give you a better answer than I can. ^.^; Might take a while however, because she's been busy in RL lately and not connecting as much.)

Yep. True four legged anims certainly can be done; I just whipped up a simple horse walk proof-of-concept animation using the av's arms and legs. Back legs walk digitigrade and front legs (av's arms) walk more or less plantigrade. It's rough and ugly looking as a first-try, but more importantly I know now it can be done without too much trouble.

If someone is willing to help me make the biomechanics accurate (I am not terribly familiar with how horses walk, canter, etc), I'm willing to make the animations.

Holler.

Okay all, my next revision of a true quadrupedal av animation is ready. I threw together a clydesdale av from a torn-apart statue build from awhile back.

But, as before, I need eyes on the anim to tell me what's wrong with it so I can make it right. =)

It's just a simple walking gait and probably inaccurate somehow, but it is at least true 4 legged motion.

IM me inworld if you'd like to offer critique on it.

I would really like to see avatars based off this:
/15/da/37403/1.html

The problem Nekokami, and others, have been citing is the fact that there's been no true way to use other than the Second Life avatars - which limits people to using certain preset joint bending points. Furthermore, folks've been limited to only a set number of true "appendages," leaving the rest to be either animated in a jerky manner or, most cases, not at all.

I'm using past-tense because I just finished my prim animator and am itching to see what people will do with it. This is one option - mechs, moving statues, and what tells what else are also possible. So... take two pills, knock yourselves out, and call me in the morning. :D

I made a crawl animation, and a crawl replacer, so you can crawl around as if you were just walking... contact me in world.

Great! That sounds useful! Sounds like we're working for slightly different goals, tho. The hands and feet of the quad anim I'm cookin up are articulated differently than as for crawling, though, to facilitate digitigrade motion. Hopefully with some help I can iron out the kinks. =)

ohhh so you would want them on thier hands and feet instead of on thier knees? I am sorry I think I read it wrong the first time.

Not to nitpick or anything but horses aren't digitigrade, they're unguligrade. I don't think that means much as far as animations will go, I just thought I'd point that out. In a true digitigrade, the entity would walk on the ball of the foot and the digits, whereas horses and other ungulates actually walk on the very tips of their toes. It would be the equivalent of us walking on the very tips of our toes (ouch).

Anyway I have a four legged avatar now, and I'd love to try out some quad animation poses or test them for you guys. Right now the back legs are immobile, so it looks kind of gimpy or muppet-like when it walks. I just got my hands on poser, so I'm going to attempt making them on my own, but it's a daunting task for a newb like myself.

If anyone would like some diagrams of animal anatomy to help show how an animal's back legs are almost identical in structure to a human's legs, I can provide those as well. This is just in-case people think an animal's knees are bent backwards, when they're actually in the same position as ours.
