I have Poser 6 and it's apparently the most updated it can get (according to Curious Labs).
I'm no stranger to importing or exporting files or rigging models, but since Linden Labs says that they suggest Poser 6 for animation, one would assume that the files they distribute would be up-to-date. I have followed along the Read-Me file, however Poser 6 is different from Poser 5. I can't open the CR2 or OBJ file directly (it's invisible) and if I try to import it, there's no skeleton, the pieces are merged so that no pieces can move independently and it's just a world of crud trying to resolve this on my own...

Is there a GOOD set of SETUP instructions? so that a person who's never used Poser can load a file and start animating? I find the Readme rather lacking.

I used Poser5 and now use Poser6. It was the exact same both setting. According to note card...
From: someone
The Folder "SL Avatar" contains two custom Poser 4/5 figures, "SL_Female" and "SL_Male." These characters match the base Second Life female and male meshes (prior to any morphs applied). They also contain matching texture UVs and bone/joint orientations. Using these custom figures rather than the standard figures supplied with Poser should result in more accurate animations uploaded into Second Life. The proportions of these figures can be further modified within Poser to create accurate animations for specific SL characters.

The mesh on each of the Poser models is divided into 3 material groups matching the SL avatar head, upperbody, and lowerbody textures. These groups allow clothing, skin, and tattoo textures to be previewed on the character within Poser as opposed to requiring logging in to Second Life.

To add the Poser figures to your Poser Library:

1. Navigate to the install location of your Poser app. and open the 'character' folder of your Poser library. (For example, ...¥Poser 5¥Runtime¥libraries¥character)

2. Copy the 'SL Avatar' folder and its contents into the character folder.

3. Start Poser and clear the work space.

4. Open the Poser library and click the 'Figures' button to reveal the character folder categories. Open the "SL Avatar" folder to find 2 new characters, "SL_Female" and "SL_Male". Double click the icon to add it to your scene.
NOTE TO POSER 4 USERS: The icon in the library will appear as a generic figure shrugging his shoulders. There may be a couple warning messages about the version number of the character but click through these and the character will be added to your scene. You can then click on the '+' button in the library to create an identical character that will have a new icon and will open without any warning messages.

5. If you want to make this character your default startup Poser character open the 'Edit/General Prefs.' menu, set the Document Preference to 'Launch to Preferred State', and press the 'Set Preferred State' button. Now each time you launch Poser it will load the SL mannequin automatically as its default figure.
I couldn't find any description there that you had to open the CR2 or OBJ file directly.

I'm just used to Maya .ma or .mb scene files where everything is in one file.

Thanks

OK I too got the avies into Poser6. Can someone please tell me what to do with the bvh files that download with the avies from SL?
My Poser is so new, my experience so limited, that I still have the box!

In the Pose Room:

1. Load the avatar from your character library.
2. Make sure the avatar is the selected figure.
3. Turn off Inverse Kinetics for the figure. Click Figure -> Inverse Kinetics. Uncheck for each limb.
4. Click on File -> Import.
5. You will get a menu that includes the option of importing a .bvh file. Choose it.
6. Select the particular .bvh file you want to load from wherever you have stored it.
7. The .bvh file is now loaded into the character. You'll notice that the Animation palette may reflect that frames have been added to accomodate the .bvh. You can scroll from frame to frame to confirm that the animation has loaded.
9. If this is something you will use a lot, you can save the animation to the Pose library (at least you can in Poser 7, I assume you can in Poser 6).
9. When you want to save your new animation to a .bvh, use File -> Export.
