OK... I have gone through the threads for all the Poser 4 info I could find. Upgraded to 4.0.3, followed all the directions. When I open my Library, I see the generic shrugging figure. However, instead of a warning about the version, i just get a "Can't open" message.

Any ideas?

As I'm not a Poser 4 user, I don't think I can answer this correctly. But Poser 4.0.3 seems to work fine. See this thread. And if you read this thread, you'll find this part.
From: someone
NOTE TO POSER 4 USERS: The icon in the library will appear as a generic figure shrugging his shoulders. There may be a couple warning messages about the version number of the character but click through these and the character will be added to your scene. You can then click on the '+' button in the library to create an identical character that will have a new icon and will open without any warning messages.

EDIT1: Woops, you must have seen this thread. hmm... sorry, I try to serch it again. :(

EDIT2: Searching old threads but I couldn't find your trouble. So it is possible that it is your local problem.
Did you really see SL avatars in the library window? A male one is light green and a feamle one is purple.
