how do I change the avatar's race

I used the slider that said darker but I was still white and I'm trying to be black. I can't find anywhere else that will change her skin colour... please help.

There are so many places - looking on Xstreet or in this forum thread may help you find places to look. Try demo skins before you buy.

There are also quite a lot of good free skins that are around at places like The Shelter and NCI.
Many shops have deals for new residents, too.

You can find some skins in your inventory, in the library folder. If you look in Clothing, More outfits, Ruth, there is a skin called "Lightly Tanned Skin" that will let you change the color from a really white person to a dark brown person.

While in the appearance editor you can use the Save As button to copy the skin and change it's name to something more sensible, like Dark Brown Skin.

If you use the Ruddiness slider on that skin turned darked brown, you can change it from dark brown to really really dark brown.

Some black people have a sort of blueish tint to their skin. I don't see any way to get that effect using the appearance editor on that "Lightly Tanned Skin" from the Ruth folder. For that one probably needs to get a skin from a store or a freebie site as mentioned above.
