I'm new-ish to Second Life and I'm trying to recreate a scene from a movie in Second Life. Ideally I need an avatar to automatically walk in a straight line without me having to use the cursor keys. Is it possible to create an animation for this?

Yes - but not very far - only 10 metres maximum distance and then when the animation ends the avatar will jump back to the start position - unless you add some scripting to move it.

What you do is create an animation of them walking in place, or use that animation. Then you sit them on an invisible prim that's scripted to move along the path you want. Check the Scripting Tips forum for how to write that script.
