Sitting in Avimator?

I've been using Avimator for a few days now, but keep hitting one problem. While arm movements and head movements and such translate well when I preview the animation in the uploader, leg movements don't. if my figure is sitting on thin air in Avimator, they'll be standing firmly upright in SL's uploader, arms waving but legs straight as a board.
What am I doing wrong? I'm guessing it's a "first frame preturb" problem, but SLAT is way too conflusing an interface to work in... avimator's simpler.
My end goal is to make a beanbag chair sit animation, with a joystick held in your lap. (a VIDEO GAME joystick, not a... you know.)

I tried setting the priority to 4 or 5 in the previewer, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

Okay, I thought of another thing. Do you have a T-pose for frame 1? SL doesn't actually use frame 1 in the animation, and instead uses it as a reference for what body parts have moved. If your legs don't move at all from their position in frame 1, SL interprets that as the legs not being animated.

In avimator, my frame 1 and last frame are identical -- the character's sitting, after all. So SL chucks frame 1 and actually starts with frame 2? Hmm. I'll try keyframing that one also...
...nope, no change. When I preview it in SL with priority 4, my arms move, but not my legs.

Further weirdness. I tried uploading it anyway, as a test (it's only L10...) Sometimes it works. Sometimes it sits, but the legs don't bend as much at the hips and knees as they should. Sometimes the legs don't bend at all and the body's just straight and arm waving. It seems almost random... Maybe avimator just stinks.  Maybe I should hire someone to do this animation for me...

In frame 1, it should look like the basic t-pose. In frame 2, it should be the sit pose you want and every part of the body,except maybe the head and neck, should be green to show that you've modified them. Follow same upload settings as stated above.

Yeah - The first frame is a reference frame, so if your hips (the general point of positional movement in an animation) is at 'waist height' then when you move them down in the second frame, your animation will move down as well.
If they start at 'sitting position' then the uploader then automatically configures 'sitting position' as 'waist height' and then your lower half doesnt appear to do much of anything.
Same with the position of the legs etc - if they are bent in the first frame, the uploader assumes that the legs are in the 'straight' position as you would expect for a T pose - because there is no movement between the position in the first and second frames, the uploader doesnt actually see any reason to move them away from the default 'straight leg' pose.
