As anyone who frequents Slashdot or other tech news sites knows, Blender just had a major release with a lot of improvements. Now, I haven't used Blender much, but I noticed that this version supports both Poser/Wavefront OBJ files (the avatar mannequins) and BVH animation import and export. I was able to test the import though I'm not familiar enough with Blender to make a test animation for SL.
Anyway, I know that Blender has been the focus of some discussion here, and supposedly it hasn't supported the formats that SL uses until now. If someone familiar with Blender wants to check into this and see if everything we need for free Poser replacement is there, great; otherwise I'll be trying to dig into the program and someday (months in the future) create a tutorial.

Whoa. If the Blender-imported mannequins come out rigged up to move realistically just like they do in Poser, then this is excellent news! I once detailed the process for exporting a Blender-made anim as an SL-compatible BVH in this thread; now perhaps the rest of the chain is complete! I'm gonna have to try this out now...

Alright, I did a bit of research. It appears that the OBJ files included with the SL Avatar ZIP only store mesh data. The actual character rigging data seems to be contained in the CR2 files, and Blender still has no way of importing this. So someone would still need to create a realistic rigging manually. Oh well... at least the meshes might make the rigging process a little easier. I know they'd definitely help in making actual animations once rigging has been completed!

CR2 Bone importer for Blender
01-09-2006 21:59
Someone has created a CR2 Bone importer for Blender. Check it out here. http://www.linux.ucla.edu/~phaethon/blender/cr2bone_import/cr2bone_import.htmlI am still failing to make even the canned animations work in Blender, but then again I admit I am a noob when it comes to animation

I was just playing with Blender the other day and had found a BVH importer with a IK bone setup...done by Reevan McKay and I don't remember what site it was on. But it seems to work and shows the animations very nicely, allows posing of the bones, I guess if I knew more about Blender I'd already be making animations.
